Tulane Grads Team Up Again to Aid Students
"Costumes for a Cause" is a benefit to aid first time college students from low income families. This is the second event coordinated by Tulane graduates and businesswomen, Nina Santa Marina and Adia Lundy. The event is scheduled to take place November 22, 2008 at The Precinct, 1377 Annunciation (at Terpsichore) in New Orleans.
"Costumes for a Cause" will be an evening of fun, food and fundraising, complete with a male auction and several silent auctions. Community Coffee, Kentwood Water, Café Reconcile, St. Charles Bistro, the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel and Goodwork Network are just a few of local businesses who have signed on as sponsors for this event along with the City of New Orleans Mayor’s Office, St. John the Baptist Parish President’s Office and dedicated Hall of Famer, former Saints player Joe Johnson will be on hand to lend his support.
Nina Santa Marina is the president and founder of the Cheffen Wilson Milton Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for first time college students from low income families to help purchase books and supplies for college. The CWM Foundation presents at least two fundraising events per year strictly for this cause. The first event of this year was April 12th, The Art of Modeling Education Fashion Show, which was held April 12th at Generations Hall. There were over 400 people in attendance and 8 local fashion designers as well as Ayesha Thomas, designer of A Y Clothing from Hollywood, California, who was the featured guest designer brought in by Adia Lundy.
Adia Lundy graduated from Tulane in May of this year and is currently operating her own Public Relations/Consulting company, Masse Media Consulting, LLC. Masse Media has provided the event planning for both fundraisers. When she was offered the opportunity to help plan the fashion show she said, "I just had to do it! I think these events are a great service to college students and also provide avenues that bring the community together." Lundy's philanthropic nature has prompted her to start her own non-profit, The Lundy Initiative. The Lundy Initiative is still in its developmental stages, but upon completion, it will be a career mentorship program for high school students.
